Preparation of Sperm For ICSI

The male partner has to produce a sample of sperm, which are washed and prepared for ICSI.  If the male partner has no sperm in his ejaculate, there are several methods that can be used to see if sperm can be found in the testes. (surgical removal of sperm link)

For ICSI, one sperm is injected into the centre of each egg and the eggs are stored in an incubator at body temperature.  The next day they are examined to see if they have fertilized. If they have, they are monitored for a further 2- 4 days and a decision will be made as to which is the best day to transfer the embryos.  Failed fertilisation can occur for a number of reasons, including when there is a sperm problem, i.e. poor movement, low count. Occasionally the eggs may fail to fertilise when the sperm and eggs appear normal.
