Number of Embryos to transfer

At the CRGH we have very high success rates.  Historically, many IVF centres have replaced multiple embryos to try and improve pregnancy rates but this has lead to high multiple pregnancies (twins triplets and more). Today we have improved culture and selection methods, and almost all IVF centres are moving to elective single embryo transfer in the majority of cases.  The aim of this is to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancy, which is very high if more than one embryo is transferred.

Some patients worry that replacing a single embryo will reduce their chances of having a baby.  This is true if you only have one embryo available for transfer, but if you have a good number of embryos available, the best embryo can be selected for transfer and any remaining good quality embryos can be frozen for transfer at a later date.  Therefore the effective way to avoid multiple pregnancy is an elective single embryo transfer.  If you are under 35 years old, have no history of a failed IVF/ICSI, have a normal endometrium and have two good quality blastocysts, we will recommend single embryo transfer.  We also recommend single embryo transfer in cases of frozen/thawed embryo replacement.  At the CRGH our data shows that the pregnancy rate for single embryo transfer is not significantly different than for double embryo transfer but the multiple pregnancy rate is almost zero.
