The male partner has to produce a sample of sperm, which are washed and prepared for mixing with the eggs. The eggs and the sperm are mixed together and stored in an incubator at body temperature. The next day they are examined to see if they have fertilized. If they have, they are monitored for a further 2- 4 days and a decision will be made as to which is the best day to transfer the embryos. Failed fertilisation can occur for a number of reasons, including when there is a sperm problem, i.e. poor movement, low count. Occasionally the eggs may fail to fertilise when the sperm and eggs appear normal.
