Vitrification

What Is It?

Vitrification is a rapid freezing technique used instead of the traditional slow freezing process. At CRGH, all embryo and oocyte freezing is performed using this method.

Why?

When freezing embryos, damage to the embryos can occur due to the formation of ice crystals. Vitrification reduces the incidence of ice crystal formation within the embryo and as such gives improved post-thaw survival rates and higher pregnancy and live birth rates from frozen embryo transfer cycles.

Given the high rates of survival, fertilisation and ongoing normal pregnancies from this technique, vitrification of oocytes is a leading option in the management of female infertility.
